Why Soy Serious? China's Growing Soybean Footprint

We have previously blogged about China's consumption of soybeans as a 'virtual water trade' to address problems of water scarcity on the mainland. On the same theme, new research put together by John Newton and Todd Kuethe of the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois puts China's role as a consumer of US soybeans in clear perspective.

In 1995-1996, China was the final consumer of  a small proportion of US-produced soybeans:
